The Bayeux Tapestry has arrived in London for the first time in nearly 1,000 years and will be on display at the British Museum from September 10, 2026, until July 2027. This historic event marks a significant moment in the shared history of Britain and France.
The initial release of tickets has already sold out but there will be further chances to purchase later in the year. The tapestry itself is some 70m long and over a 1000 years old and is classed as ‘priceless’ However the UK Treasury has provisionally agree to insure the historical artefact and the figure calculated for that is some £800 million!!! Amazing but then it is one of a kind!
Not directly related to our local history but an important a part of our national history.. We thought that there would be many people locally interested in learning more about this artifact.
So the Society is arranging a Zoom Event with a talk by Mia Hanson who has completed a full size replica of the tapestry. She’s got a close up, stitch by stitch knowledge of the tapestry, you may have heard her on the BBC
The event takes place at St Mary’s Church Hall on Saturday 3rd October at 1:45 pm. It will be an all ticket event.
